Drinking four cups of coffee each day is known to be able in reducing the risk of a woman to suffer from diabetes mellitus by half. However, the active substances that play a role in the mechanism is still not obvious.

The connection between coffee and a reduced risk of diabetes actually have been acknowledged by the scientists for quite a long time. In a research that done by Herng-Ching Lin, professor from Taipei Medical University, researchers team gather data of 23.1999 people who have brain injury between the year of 2001 and 2003. They compare the patients with 69.597 non-brain traumatic patients.

From brain injury patients group, 2.91 percent suffer from stroke three months after the injury. Meanwhile, in non-injury patients, it is only 0.30 percent. In other words, the risk is increasing up to 10 percents.

Patients with brain injury also have high risk of getting fractured skull. They also susceptible from brain hemorrhage, hypertension, diabetic, coronary heart disease, and heart failure compare to non-traumatic patients.

“Stroke is the most serious nerve disturbance. The result of our research shows the identification of stroke as additional problem after brain injury,” said Lin.
Experts also remind, even small trauma can cause rip in artery vessel, so it can disturb the blood circulation to the brain and trigger stroke.

The most active volcano in iceland erupted

An eruption of fire had been burst from the most active volcano in Iceland, namely the Mount Grimsvotn, Saturday (21/5). That is the statement for the Reykjavik government.

According to the visuals provided the Iceland TV station RUV, smoke from the eruption could be seen from many parts at the southern parts of Iceland. The Iceland Meteorology Agency had also confirmed the Mount Grimsvotn’s eruption.

However, Iceland scientists believe that the Grimsvotn eruption is small and will not cause a havoc in the air travel for the Europe like a year ago, which was caused by the eruption of an active volcano, Eyjafjallajokul.

Mount Grimsvotn is situated in the middle of Vatnajokull geyser. Grimsvotn is the most active volcano in Iceland with the biggest recorded eruption occurred in 1922, 1933, 1934, 1938, 1945,1954, 1983,1998 and 2004. Most of those eruptions last for one to three weeks.

LinkedIn Corp had decided the price for the first public offer for its stocks at $45 per piece. The value becomes the basis for the highest projection for a professional network service. LinkedIn stocks’ will be traded on Thursday (19/5) at New York Stock Exchange with a code of LNKD.

YouTube launches online video rental service

500 Years Old Book Found

A big thick book aged 500 years old was founded last weekend in Utah, Unites States. The man, who refuses to say his name, got the book from his uncle who kept the book for centuries in his house’s storey.

As reported by Associated Press, Sunday (25/4), this old worn book is the blueprint of “Nuremberg Chronicle”, an illustrated history book, which aged 500 years old. The Germany Edition Book was written by Anton Koberger and published at 1493 that known as the early age of Bible. This book is also recognized as the first illustrated book at 15th Century.

Now, the obsolete book is kept by Ken Sanders, the owner of a book store in Utah. According to him, that book is not a rare item as it was published in quite large amounts and spread out trough the world. However, this book attracts many attentions from antique collectors in US. One of antique book seller in San Francisco, John Windle, says that the book can be valued for around 1 million US dollars if it were in good condition.

The childhood brain development consists of three main phases which range from primitive brain (the action brain), limbic brain (feeling brain) and finally neocortex (Thought brain). Although they all are connected one another, each of them has its own functions. Primitive brain helps to physically survive, to generate the reflex motions, to control motor motions and to process the information resulted from senses. Limbic brain processes the emotion and also connects the liaison brain to primitive thoughts.

Meanwhile the thinking brain is known as the most objective part of the brain, it receives the inputs from the primitive and limbic brain. However it requires more time to process the information from the primitive brain to the limbic brain. The thinking brain is the place where experience, memory, feelings and thinking ability are met to produce the ideas and actions. Nerve Myelination of the brain happens in sequence from the primitive brain, limbic brain to thinking brain. Neural pathways which are used more frequently will thicken the myelination. The thicker myelin the faster nerve impulses or signals will travel along the nerves. This is why growing children are encouraged to receive input from the environment according to the development.

In additions, children also need to have experience to stimulate all senses. The stimulation and development of the senses develop certain parts of the primitive brain which is called Reticular Activating System (RAS) which is known as the area of the brain that allows us to focus the attention. Officially, Japan says its economy is more and more receding due to the earthquake and tsunami that happened on Friday (11/3/2011). It means that the forecasts for economic growth are also slumped. In fact, before the natural disasters, Japan was already in the middle of difficult condition.

The government, as the AP and AFP reported on Wednesday (13/4/2011), said that several important economic sectors, such as industrial production and exports, will be suffering from great impact. This was the first time for Japanese government to make official lowering in the last six months.

On Monday (11/4/2011), International Monetary Fund (IMF) also lowered the forecasts of economic growth in Japan. “Lately, the economic condition showed some weaknesses due to the impact of massive earthquake in the eastern Japan region,” said a statement on the Government of Japan economic monthly report. “The economy (in the region) remains in bad condition,” the report said.

The natural disasters gave massive impacts to many companies operating in northeastern region of Japan, destroyed many factories, and inhibited the supply chain.

Power shortage caused by the crisis in Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant seems to continue until mid-year. This electrical crisis led the government to implement power-down rotation. This policy is obstructing the production of several manufacturers owned by many large companies in the country.

Analysts said that the two natural disasters that hit Japan has backed the efforts of the government to restore the condition even further.

Texas is going to be the host of motoGP in 2013

The promoter of MotoGP, Doma Sports, announced that it had agreed Texas as the venue for a series of races which are going to be held for 10 years which will begin in 2013. Full Throttle Production, 3FourTexasMGP, and Doma Sports have agreed that the race will be held in Austin, Texas.

The circuit which was used as former racetrack is currently under construction. The classes which are contested still consist of three; main class (MotoGP), Moto2 and Moto3 (the replacement of 125 cc class which will be enacted in 2012).

“We are so glad to add MotoGP series in the American calendar. It is an honor to extend the championship up to Texas,” said Carmelo Ezpelata, CEO of Doma Sports. Ezpelata also said that his party has been having good relationship with Kevin Schwntz (former GP racer) for 20 years.

Texas itself, in the world of top class motor racing, has been able to produce some world champions such as Kevin Schwantz in 1993. Now, there are to riders who are ready to fight, namely Ben Spies, who came from Longview, and Colin Edwards.

“For me, this like a dream comes true that the MotoGP world championship will take place in my home land, “said Schwantz who recently holds the position in 3FourTexasMGP. He admits that he is confident with this racing arena and he also knows the popularity of this racing series. “In the future, I am sure that the race in Texas will be successful,” said Schwantz who was a former rider or Suzuki team.

Austin will be the place to stop for the third MotoGP circus troupe after Laguna Seca in Monterey (California), and Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis.

Somali Ambassador: 99 Percent, There Will be No Victims

Ambassador of Somalia, Mohamud Olow Barow said that in general, the action of the Somali pirates in taking ship as their hostage does not cause casualties. They usually do this only to threaten to get ransom money. This statement is made by considering the case in which 20 Indonesian citizens, who are the crew of MV Sinar Kudus, has been taken as captives since 16 March. “99% I am sure that there will be no casualties. Threatening is usual thing for the pirates. Once again, there will be no casualties”, said Mohamud Olow Barow during press conference which was held at the Embassy of Somali in Jakarta, on Wednesday (13/04/2011).

However, the safety of the MV Sinar Kudus’ crews who are captivated by Somali pirates must be put as priority. Mohamud Olow Barow also added and he hoped that all of the 20 crews of MV Sinar Kudus can be rescued as soon as possible. Government of Somalia, continued Barow, is ready to give aid to Indonesia in order to rescue 20 of its citizens.

As what is already known, all of the 20 crew of the MV Sinar Kudus were captivated by Somali pirates since a month ago in the region surrounding the Arabian Sea. Now, the crews who should be carrying nickel ore to Netherlands are running out of logistical matters and clean water.

The government said that it will continue the attempt to rescue all of the20 ship crews who are taken as hostages. Ambassador of Somalia said that based on UN resolutions, which were issued in 2008, it is allowed to enter Somalia’s territorial sea to use military action against the pirates. “Somalia gives permission to all countries who want to battle the pirates. We can consult, we can give intelligent information, and we can give some feedbacks. We are ready for that,” said Barrow.

He also added that the actions of Somali pirates are an international crime. Any country that can capture Somali pirates can punish the pirates under its own jurisdiction.

Morales Doesn’t Want to be Underestimated

Portugal asks for Financial Aids

The International Monetary Funds had confirmed on Friday that Portugal asked for financial aids to cover the devastating national debts. “We’re ready to respond it quickly to answer this demand and to communicate with the Portuguese government as soon as possible” said Operational Director of IMF Dominique Strauss-Kahn in her statement.

IMF works in cooperation with Europe Union and Europe Central Bank (ECB) in order to provide strategic plans to support the financial issues in Iberian countries (the countries around the southwest Europe). Previously, on Wednesday IMF said that they’re ready to support Portugal since the country has admitted to need the financial aids from Europe to cover at least few debts. “We haven’t received any demands for financial supports” said the spokesman of International Monetary Funds. “We’re ready to help Portugal”.

Portugal on Wednesday said that they decided to ask for financial aids from Europe Union to overcome their debt issues. After months of denials from the markets and partners in Europe, Jose Socrates the Portugal’s Prime Minister has resigned in his speech broadcasted in the television he confirmed that such demands for financial aids is necessary ever since his new proposal of saving program has been rejected by the parliament.

Djokovic has resigned from the Monte Carlo Masters

The first runner up World Tennis Champion Novak Djokovic who hasn’t been defeated this year has decided to quit from the Monte Carlo Masters tournament next week. His resignation was resulted from the knee injury that he suffers from. “It’s shocking and a sad news not only for the tournament and all my fans but to me as well” said the 23-year-old Serbian tennis player in his recent statement on Friday (8/4/11). However there were no further explanations regarding his injury.

Djokovic lives in such kingdom state and has spent most of his lifetime to exercise in the Monte Carlo’s tennis fields, expecting to reach a successful career in the tennis championship seasons and extends his title as the tennis champion in 26 competition in a row since December.

He added that many of his patients decide to stay on vegetarian diet, but still undergo healthy pregnancy. “The most important thing is to make a plan, so the body will not suffer from lack of nutrition. People should understand that body has its own process, if there is a lack of nutrition, the fetus will take it from the mother,” he explained.

One of the nutrition that very important for pregnancy is protein, because it plays crucial role on the forming of blood cells, albumin, enzyme, hormone, cells replacement, and many more.

Compare with vegetable protein, according to dietician dr Fiastuti Witjaksono, the animal protein has complete amino acid. For pregnant women who are vegan vegetarian or don’t consume any kind of meat and egg, include the processed egg products, she suggested that they should replace the amino acid from animal protein with many kinds of foods.

“The replacement foods can be obtained from nuts and seeds. This requirement must be fulfilled every day because if it is not, it can affect the growth and development of fetus,” she said.

Meanwhile, calcium can be obtained from foods that made of soybean, green vegetables or soy milk. Nevertheless, if the mother feels unsure about the health of her fetus, dr Fiastuti suggested that vegan vegetarian change the diet, so they still can consume milk, egg and fish.

Big Tusks, but Vegetarian

Equipped with weapon form long and scary teeth, Tiarajudens eccentricus turns out a vegetarian. Tiarajudens eccentricus not only has a pair of long teeth, but also the teeth that scattered in the palate of this big teeth mammal’s ancestor. According to the researcher, those teeth can replace the losing teeth quickly, just like on shark.

The archaeologist Juan Carlos Cisneros, who found Tiarajudens eccentricus fossil in Brazil, said that this mammal looked like the combination of several different animals. “The incisors were like horse and suitable for cutting and pulling plants. The molar were used to chew and the fang was like sword toothed cat’s fang,” Cisneros said.

This discovery is surprising for Jörg Fröbisch, who also an archaeologist. “Usually, we don’t expect that there was a big fang carnivore,” said Fröbisch who don’t get involved on the study.

The researchers guessed that those big teeth were used to repel and frighten the predators. They also explained the possibility of using the teeth for fighting with the same species.

Micro Alga Cleans the Nuclear Waste

Closterium moniliferum, one of the micro algae which lives in freshwater, has the potential to clean up the nuclear waste that dissolve in the water. The potential explained by the scientist of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, Minna Krejci, in the American Chemical Society event in Anaheim, California.

According to Krejci, this alga has the capability of cleaning Strontium-90 waste, one of the most dangerous nuclear wastes that have the half-life of 30 years. Closterium moniliferum will filter Strontium-90 from the water, accumulate into the cell part, which called vacuoles and precipitate it in crystal form.

Second, actually this alga “loves” Barium more, so it tends to take that substance instead of strontium. But, because strontium has the size and characteristics between barium and calcium, then later strontium will be taken too. Mean while, calcium that has further characteristics will be left or not accumulated.

Now, Krejci is trying to find out about the crystal forming and strontium accumulation more selectively. So far, it has been found that alga never deliberately brings strontium to the cell. The crystal forming is caused by the height of sulfate concentration in the vacuoles. It causes the fast precipitation of barium and strontium, because those two substances have low solubility level.

In order to optimize strontium accumulation, Krejci has several alternatives. Nuclear reactor waste or radioactive materials that accidently comes out can be enriched with barium, so that spur the alga to take strontium too. According to Krejci, it is not difficult because it only needs little barium.

The other possibility is to reverse the sulfate concentration in the environment, where the alga grows. So it will affect the change of sulfate concentration in the vacuoles. “Once we know how the cell responds the condition, we are able to think elegantly about the way to manipulate it,” said Krejci, who published the idea in Nature Journal.

Until now, Krejci haven’t test the endurance of Closterium moniliferum in the radioactive environment yet. But, although it has low endurance, alga can accumulate strontium, because the process only takes a short period of time. “It only takes 30 minutes to 1 hour to precipitate the crystal. If addition is needed, they are easy to culture,” said Krejci.

Successfully Creating Sperm outside the Body

Researchers in Yokohama City University successfully made rat sperm and used it to produce breed. It is a development that might help barren men in the future.

The sperm is grown outside the rat body by using tissue, which consists of sperm stem cells. It is called spermagonia and taken from rat’s babies. Those Japan researchers then tried to develop the cells into sperm by using chemical materials that imitate the natural environment, where they normally grow.

That mixed chemical materials fluid is called knock out serum replacement (KSR). This formula is used to make sure that the stem cells don’t change. Here, Takehiko Ogawa, urology professor from Japan found the opposite effect. He and his partners found out that spermagonia changed into mature sperm.

“We haven’t got the key factor that makes the KSR works that way yet,” said Ogawa. “This becomes our next challenge. We’ll determine the factor and make a better medium to develop high quality of sperm,” he continued.

This research result proves that there is a hope for barren men and boys who are undergoing chemotherapy. “When people are treated because of cancer, there is a big possibility of infertility,” said Martin Dym, biochemical professor from Georgetown University.

In mature men, according to Dym that not join in the studio, the sperm can be frozen before the treatment. “In children, we cannot do it. But they have testis cell. If we can develop it, they can be used to create fertilization outside the uterus,” Dym explained more.

Nevertheless, the health consequence of creating sperm outside the body still needs to be concerned. Steve Krawetz, midwifery and gynecology professor from Wayne State University, said that sperm making from stem cells can produce DNA changes, which make the cells susceptible to various environment factors. “Those changes can cause bad effects and derived in the next generation,” said Krawetz.

Nevertheless, Krawetz admitted that this system is fantastic. “This is a big step forward,” he said.
