Coffee Can Reduce Diabetes Risk for Women

Drinking four cups of coffee each day is known to be able in reducing the risk of a woman to suffer from diabetes mellitus by half. However, the active substances that play a role in the mechanism is still not obvious.

The connection between coffee and a reduced risk of diabetes actually have been acknowledged by the scientists for quite a long time. One of the proofs is the 2004 study which was published in the journal of Diabetes Care. It was mentioned there that caffeine is not dangerous for diabetics because it prevents the breakdown of glucose.

Another study revealed that coffee increases the levels of sex hormone binding globulin in the blood (sex hormone binding globulin / SHBG). High levels of SHBG are known to lower the risk of diabetes mellitus.

Latest research which was done by a team from University of California, Los Angeles, which compared the medical history and coffee drinking habits of 359 women with diabetes and 359 healthy women for 10 years.
It turned out that women who drink four cups of coffee per day have higher SHBG levels and the risk of being diabetics can be lowered up to 56 percent compared to those who do not drink coffee.
