Brain Injury Risks Stroke
Injury on the head, especially brain is better to watch out, because it increases the risk of getting stroke up to 10 times. Even mild injury cannot be taken lightly. Injury in brain part can cause many complications, like artery crack or rip, heart injury or blood clots disturbance that can increase stroke risk.
“Trauma injury in the brain before is not included in stroke risk factor. Although the mechanism is not clear, but the relation between those two things deserves to be researched,” said Dr. Ralp Sacco, American Heart Association president.
According the data of Center for Disease Control and Prevention, every year in the United States there are 53 brain injury patients. Because the damage that caused by the injury often cannot be seen, experts call the injury as silent epidemic.
In a research that done by Herng-Ching Lin, professor from Taipei Medical University, researchers team gather data of 23.1999 people who have brain injury between the year of 2001 and 2003. They compare the patients with 69.597 non-brain traumatic patients.
From brain injury patients group, 2.91 percent suffer from stroke three months after the injury. Meanwhile, in non-injury patients, it is only 0.30 percent. In other words, the risk is increasing up to 10 percents.
Patients with brain injury also have high risk of getting fractured skull. They also susceptible from brain hemorrhage, hypertension, diabetic, coronary heart disease, and heart failure compare to non-traumatic patients.
“Stroke is the most serious nerve disturbance. The result of our research shows the identification of stroke as additional problem after brain injury,” said Lin.
Experts also remind, even small trauma can cause rip in artery vessel, so it can disturb the blood circulation to the brain and trigger stroke.
